Treatment of Spider Veins

Testimonials

"I was a bit afraid before the procedure. I like the way Dr. Saunders explained to me all details. I was out after 50 minutes, no pain, and no stress. Thank you,"

Sclerotherapy involves injection of medications into the vein that permanently close the treated vein. Using different techniques sclerotherapy can be used to effectively close both small and very large varicose veins in properly selected patients.

Spider veins or telangectasia are usually a cosmetic concern only. In certain patients however they are a marker of deeper more serious venous problems that can lead to an insidious progression of chronic venous stasis disease. Our specialists will look for signs of venous insufficiency with a duplex ultrasound performed as part of your physical examination. Without a duplex examination we are blind to the processes going on in the veins well beneath the surface of the skin. Having complete information at the initial treatment planning allows us to prescribe correct and durable therapies that give excellent results and cost you less time and money over the long run.

Here at the Canadian Vein Institute we have technology that allows us to see veins under the skin that are invisible to the eye. These invisible reticular veins are commonly the underlying source of the spider veins on the surface. See the reticular veins as the root and the spider veins the weed. Using advanced sclerotherapy techniques we are able to close these reticular veins. Traditional liquid sclerotherapy of the spider veins is then performed with durable long term results. On average a grouping of spider vein will take from two to five sessions to close fully. Each session of sclerotherapy should be separated by 4-6 weeks before injecting the same area again.
